Subtlety, thy name is most definitely not Ryan Murphy. The “Glee” creator ups the sparkle-tastic, LGBTQ-friendly ante with his adaptation of the hit Broadway musical about a lesbian Indiana high schooler who has to fight the system to be able to go to prom. Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and James Corden lead the way in the over-the-top fun-fest that has its heart very much in the right place, even as it stumbles on its over-simplified message and way-too-easy resolution—there’s nothing that can’t be fixed with a snappy Broadway number, right?!
