George Clooney wears two hats (three, if you count producing) in this uber-bleak dystopian sci-fi flick based on the best-selling novel “Good Morning, Midnight”. As the star, Clooney turns in a beautifully understated performance, but as director, he falters, unsuccessfully trying to mash-up human drama, science fiction, the apocalypse, and parenting issues into one cohesive movie. It’s high on slick effects, sure, but there’s not much here we didn’t see done much better in 2013’s “Gravity.”
