The first film from Apple-backed Skydance Animation (the new home of ousted Pixar honcho John Lasseter), Luck is a wildly convoluted story of a comically unlucky teenage girl in foster care. She travels to the Land of Luck to help a young friend find a forever home with a new family, but there’s no end to the obstacles and mishaps that stand in her way. Along for the ride are a black cat (Simon Pegg), a dragon (Jane Fonda), and a bevy of leprechauns—none of which help much in making this very coherent. Sure, the animation is pretty, and the kids will be entertained, but the rest of us are left scratching our heads at what we’re watching.
