George Clooney helms this touching adaptation of J. R. Moehringer’s memoir of growing up in 1970s New York, starring Ben Affleck, Tye Sheridan, and Lily Rabe. Though infused with drops of melancholy, it still manages to eke out a satisfying and heartwarming message, powered by excellent performances all around (including Christopher Lloyd in a glorified cameo). Clooney perfectly captures the time and elevates the film from what could have been simply standard coming-of-age fare.
