Jon Hamm tries his best to assume the mantle that Chevy Chase first wore in 1985’s cult hit, but a meandering and needlessly convoluted script about art theft and murder is only part of the issue. The bigger problem is that Hamm—as talented and respected as he is—doesn’t have (or decided against using) the required smarmy, dry wit that Chase brought to the role. There’s a difference between a loveable jerk and an outright jerk, and Hamm’s performance unfortunately goes the wrong way.
