Based on a true story, this tale of a Merchant Mariner who decides to head to Vietnam in the middle of the war, just to deliver beers to his buddies from the neighborhood, suffers from a wildly uneven (and often preachy) script. Zac Efron, continuing to prove that he’s far more than just a ‘High School Musical’ pretty face, carries the film admirably, but the neck-snapping tone changes (from goofy escapades to the grisly horrors of war and back again) will have you wondering what might have been had someone other than Peter Farrelly been in the director’s chair.
