Along the lines of ‘Wicked’ and ‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead’, director Karen Maine’s ‘Rosaline’ offers a unique take on an established literary work. (This time, it’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’.) Unlike those examples, however, this thing starts wearing out its welcome fairly early on, relying on the same joke over and over—corseted ladies and waistcoated men are all speaking in modern-day LOL lingo! Sure, Kaitlyn Dever is solid as the titular jilted ex of Romeo, and Minnie Driver and Bradley Whitford do nice work in supporting roles, but that’s pretty much as far as it goes.
