Set ten years after the events of ‘Enchanted’ (but released 15 years after the original), it has all the parts and pieces in place to be a worthy successor, but ‘Disenchanted’ simmers more than it soars. Director Adam Shankman threw his all into it, and the stars—including returnees Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, Idina Menzel, and James Marsden—seem to be having a ball, but the magic and whimsy have all but left the building. Sure, it’s cute and mildly amusing, but it plays like every other fairy tale movie you’ve seen and has completely jettisoned the inventiveness and satire that made the original so fun and memorable.
