Directed by Johan Renck (‘Chernobyl’), this sparse drama starts with plenty of promise, with Adam Sandler as Jakub, a solo astronaut six months into a mission to investigate a strange cloud near Jupiter. Shortly after we pick up the story, though, he comes face-to-face with a huge (though friendly?) spider, which may or may not be his own self-conscious playing tricks on his lonely and tormented brain. (Aside from being lonely, he has left his sad wife, played by Carey Mulligan, back home.) Renck and cinematographer Jakob Ihre paint a pretty picture, to be sure, but the film never really gets out of neutral and winds up feeling like a long, slow (and very strange) voyage to nowhere.
