He’s certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, and director Yorgos Lanthimos (‘The Lobster’, ‘The Favourite’) may not earn new fans with this blatantly sexual, wildly grotesque, and unabashedly off-the-wall effort, but his fans will surely feel right at home. Emma Stone turns in the performance of the year, throwing her all into Bella Baxter, a woman who comes of age from having the mind of a toddler to being an erudite adult over the course of the film’s two-plus hours. There’s no question it’s a visually striking film, but this Frankenstein-ish heaping helping of bizarreness is more off-putting than anything else, a supremely difficult watch that will either make you run out of the theater or hail it as a triumph of avant-garde cinema.
