Winner of the Fipresci Prize for enterprising filmmaking at Cannes in 2023, this dark and violent film about three men in late-19th century Chile trying to clear the land of natives is a haunting and at times terrifying work of art. Along with the story of the bloody expedition, the inner turmoil each of the men faces takes a front seat, giving actors Camilo Arancibia, Benjamin Westfall, and Mark Stanley plenty to sink their teeth into. It’s not for the faint of heart, certainly, but fans who rely on the Criterion Collection to pad their film library will find a new favorite.
