What starts out as a promising film about a grim murder and the detective struggling to solve it doesn’t take long to become a somewhat tiresome effort from first-time director Grant Singer—who may have seen one too many David Fincher films and wanted (too much) to make something like them. Benicio del Toro stars as the man on the case, but he winds up looking like he’s sleepwalking through the proceedings, which does precious little to keep anything close to a decent pace going. Cinematographer Mike Gioulakis (M. Night Shyamalan’s frequent collaborator) paints an interesting picture and sets a solidly eerie mood, but in the end, that’s about all this slog has going for it.
