How is Laura Linney not one of the most celebrated actors at work today? Her outstanding talents are yet again on display in this black comedy (or light-ish drama) that centers on teenager Doris (Nico Parker), who is struggling to keep her head above water as her brother is in brain-cancer-induced hospice care. Linney is their mom, as acerbic as she is clueless, and she straddles the ridiculously fine line between horrible and understandably adrift. Woody Harrelson is on board, too, taking Doris under his wing, much as he did with Hailee Steinfeld in ‘The Edge of Seventeen’. It’s a tug-at-your-heartstrings bit of sweetness that would have probably bombed in theaters but is certainly worth 100 minutes of your time on Hulu.
