Inspired by an episode of ‘This American Life’, this story of woeful schlub Phil Loder (Peter Dinklage), who wants nothing more than to own his own home, is a quirky and fun black comedy. When Phil discovers an opportunity to move into a sprawling mansion, he takes it, only to quickly discover that, naturally, it’s too good to be true. Shirley MacLaine co-stars as the woman of the house, and she and Dinklage play off each other beautifully. The script by Theodore Melfi (‘Hidden Figures’) is witty and sly, and the supporting cast, including Danny Glover, Matt Dillon, and Kim Quinn, collectively elevates the film, making it a surprising and entertaining little watch.
