The powerful directorial debut of Dev Patel (who also stars and co-wrote the screenplay) is an all-out assault in the vein of ‘John Wick’—dark and violent and twisted and often super-frenetic. Typically, first-time directors tend to either overdo it or just play it safe, but Patel finds the glorious middle ground, crafting a phenomenal story about a man out for revenge. It’s a deliberate slow burn that will have you right on board from the outset and consistently wiping the blood splatter off your popcorn bucket.
